What does the right messaging do for your business?

You might offer exactly what somebody needs.

But if they cannot quickly understand what you do, why it matters or why they should choose you, they may never take the next step.

That is where messaging comes in.

Messaging is how you explain the important parts of your business clearly and consistently.

It helps people understand:

  • what you do
  • who it is for
  • what problem you solve
  • why you are different
  • what they can expect
  • what they should do next

It is not one clever strapline, its more a collection of messages that consistently runs through your website, social media, emails, proposals and customer conversations.

Positioning and messaging are not the same thing

Your positioning is what you want to be known for. Your messaging is how you communicate it.

Let’s use a bathroom design and installation business as an example.

Its positioning might be:

We want to be known for helping homeowners create beautiful, high-quality bathrooms through expert guidance and personal support from start to finish.

Its messaging could then include:

  • Expert help choosing the right layout, products and finishes
  • Thoughtful bathroom design built around your home and lifestyle
  • One point of contact throughout the project
  • Quality products and experienced installers
  • Clear advice without confusing jargon or sales pressure

The wording does not have to be identical everywhere.

But the meaning should be consistent.

Good messaging answers the customer’s questions

Customers arrive with worries, questions and doubts.

Someone planning a new bathroom may be thinking:

How much is this going to cost?

Which products should I choose?

Will everything fit?

Will I be pressured into buying the most expensive option?

Strong messaging answers those questions before the customer has to ask.

It helps them feel understood and makes the decision easier.

Compare these two website introductions.

Vague:

“Creating innovative bathroom solutions tailored to your individual requirements.”

Clearer:

“We help homeowners design and install beautiful bathrooms, with expert advice on everything from the layout and products to the final finish.”

The second one may not win an award for creative writing, but it tells the customer what they actually need to know. And that’s far more useful.

Clear does not mean boring

Businesses sometimes worry that simple language will make them sound less professional. However, the opposite is usually true.

Clear communication shows confidence, it proves you understand your service well enough to explain it without hiding behind jargon.

A useful benchmark is to write so that somebody around the age of 9 to 11 could follow the structure and vocabulary. That does not mean writing like you are speaking to a child!

It means using:

  • shorter sentences
  • familiar words
  • clear headings
  • one idea at a time
  • less jargon
  • more space

Busy people do not want to decode your marketing, they just want to know if you can help.

Use the words your customers use

Some of your strongest messages are probably already sitting in your emails, reviews and customer conversations.

Listen to the questions people ask and look at the language they use to describe the problem.

A customer may not say:

“I require a holistic bathroom solution.”

They are far more likely to say:

“I have no idea where to start.”

“I’m worried I’ll choose the wrong things.”

“I need someone to manage the whole job.”

“I want it to look lovely, but it also needs to be practical.”

That is the language your messaging should respond to.

Try this four-part framework

Choose one service and answer these questions.

Who is it for?

Homeowners planning a new bathroom who want quality but feel overwhelmed by the choices.

What are they struggling with?

They are unsure which layout will work, what to buy and how to manage the project.

What do they want?

A beautiful, practical bathroom that suits their home and feels worth the investment.

How do you make that easier?

Through expert design advice, quality products and one point of contact from the first conversation through to installation.

Now pull it together:

We help homeowners turn an overwhelming bathroom project into a clear, well-managed process, with expert advice and support from the first idea to the finished installation.

That gives you a strong starting point for your website, social posts, emails and proposals.

Check your messaging

Look at your:

  • website homepage
  • LinkedIn profile
  • social media bios
  • brochures
  • proposals
  • Google Business Profile

Do they all tell the same basic story?

Can people quickly understand what you do?

Are you explaining the value, or just listing services?

Does the language sound human?

Could the same words belong to almost any of your competitors?

Good messaging helps the right person think:

“Yes. This sounds like it is for me.”
