What does positioning actually mean?

Positioning is one of those words that gets used a lot in branding and marketing. It can sound complicated, but it really isn’t. Your positioning is simply the space you want your business to take up in someone’s mind.

It is what you want people to recognise, remember and recommend you for, and when that’s clear, everything else gets easier.

Your marketing becomes more focused. Your team understands what to say. Your customers can quickly work out whether you are right for them.

You do not need to be known for everything

Most businesses can do lots of things, the problem comes when they try to tell people all of those things at once.

Imagine a bathroom business that offers:

  • plumbing
  • heating
  • bathroom products
  • design
  • installation
  • tiling
  • flooring
  • repairs

All of those services may be important, but a long list does not give people a clear reason to remember the business.

Compare that with:

Beautiful, high-quality bathrooms with expert guidance from design through to installation.

The business can still offer everything else. It has simply decided what it most wants to be known for.

That is positioning.

Why does it matter?

Clear positioning helps you make better decisions.

It helps you understand:

  • who you most want to work with
  • which services you should promote
  • what your website should lead with
  • what you should talk about in your marketing
  • which opportunities are right for you
  • which ones are probably a distraction

It also helps customers understand why they should choose you.

Our bathroom business is not trying to be the cheapest option or the quickest installer.

It wants to attract homeowners who value quality, want some guidance and would rather have somebody manage the whole process properly.

That gives the business a much clearer place in the market.

Try these three questions

You do not need a 50-page strategy document to begin improving your positioning.

Start here.

1. What do you want to be known for?

Not everything you can do.

Choose the thing you most want people to recognise and remember.

Too broad:

“We offer plumbing, heating, bathrooms and repairs.”

Clearer:

“We want to be known for beautifully designed, high-quality bathrooms.”

This does not mean you stop offering other services.

It just gives people a clear reason to remember you.

2. Who is it for?

“Homeowners” is probably too broad.

What kind of homeowners?

What are they struggling with?

What do they value?

What are they trying to achieve?

Too broad:

“We design bathrooms for homeowners.”

More specific:

“We help homeowners who want a high-quality bathroom but need expert guidance choosing the right layout, products and finishes.”

The aim is not to exclude everybody else.

It is to help the right people recognise themselves.

3. Why should they choose you?

This is where businesses often fall back on phrases such as:

“Excellent customer service.”

“Bespoke solutions.”

“Years of experience.”

All good things, but they are not especially memorable.

Instead, explain what you do and why it matters.

Too vague:

“We offer excellent customer service.”

Clearer:

“You work with the same person from your first showroom visit through to the final installation, so nothing gets lost between different teams.”

That gives the customer something real to understand.

Pull it all together

Try completing this sentence:

We want to be known for helping[specific audience] achieve[specific result] through [your difference or approach].

For our bathroom business, that might be:

We want to be known for helping homeowners create beautiful, high-quality bathrooms through expert guidance, thoughtful design and personal support from start to finish.

It does not have to become your final website headline, think of it as a starting point that gives your business direction.

And once those three things are clearer, everything else becomes easier:

What you offer.

What you say.

What you post.

What you ask AI to help you create.

And how people understand and remember your business.
